Today in class we continued our study of limitations. We were instructed to draw one object in the room using only one symbol. I chose to draw a pair of deer antlers. Using only the symbol "x" I drew the basic shape of the antlers and then did some shading. This limitation was challenging to me because I am so used to drawing using lines. Shading especially was difficult and my hand got tired of making the repetitive "x" motion, but I enjoyed this exercise and would like to continue practicing with limitations.

1/26/2018 0 Comments Paper Wig ExerciseThis project is was the next part of our study of Limitations. Our objective was to create a wig or a hat that is made entirely out of paper, glue, staples, or tape. I was in a group with Grace. To start, we used the model skeleton in the classroom as our model. We put plastic wrap over the head to protect it before creating a paper mache base with glue and paper strips. Next, we made leaf-like strips for hair and attached them to the base, creating a unique hairstyle for the our model. Then, we worked on making flower-like structures out of paper, attaching the flowers around the head of the skeleton like a floral headband. I really enjoyed this project because it was unique and fun, giving a little style and flare to our local skeleton!
1/25/2018 0 Comments Paper Limitations ExerciseThe next exercise concerning limitations that we did this week was an exercise limited to the use of paper and an Exacto knife. Using the knife, we were to cut the paper and create something unique. Again, this project was intimidating to me because I was unsure of how to come up with something to create. But I did some brainstorming, looking at images online and simply began making a unique design. I started with a circle and added a bird in the center, then added decorations to the design. I had to be careful not to rip the paper while cutting out the design, which was challenging. But overall I am pleased with how it turned out and I would love to do more projects like this.
1/23/2018 0 Comments Styrogami Exercise / Limitations Today in class we began a study on limitations within artwork. Limitations can be both liberating and exciting. As a quick exercise, we were each given two Styrofoam cups and an Exacto knife. Exercises like this often intimidate me because sometimes it can be difficult for me to come up with something creative to make. I brainstormed for awhile, thinking of the different things I could make with the cups. One of my options was to create an abstract piece with the Styrofoam, but I decided I wanted to make something representational. At first I wanted to make a small octopus, but as I created it it ended up looking more like a crab. So I altered some of its features and added claws and eyes, completing my Styrogami piece.
As the first assignment in class, we were told to select an object in the room to draw. Using this object, we drew on small pieces of paper a representational version of the object, followed by an abstract and then a non-objective interpretation. I chose to draw an opossum skull, starting with the Representational interpretation and then continuing on to Abstract and Non-Objective. I wish I would have used darker shading or contrast throughout each piece, and it would have been a good idea to incorporate some color, but overall I enjoyed this exercise.
1/22/2018 0 Comments My Expectations For Art IIII am incredibly excited to be taking Art III this semester. During this class, I hope to truly solidify many of my artistic skills as well as go out of my comfort zone, exploring new ideas and techniques. This year, I want to push myself to try new things without fear or doubt in myself. I also want to use my time in this class to learn everything that I can from both my teacher and my fellow students. I am excited to be given more freedom in my art-making process, and I hope to complete each project with creativity and craftsmanship while also incorporating my own emotions and passions into my artwork. This year I want to create art that is meaningful and impactful, conveying a clear message to those who see it. I would also like to continue exploring my passion for refugees through art, finding new ways to create awareness for those people as well as advocating for other people groups or minorities that I have felt called to help. I hope to push my limits and explore news ideas, learning everything that I can in this class. Through each project and artistic endeavor I undertake, I hope to use my artwork to glorify God and make an impact in this school.
